It looks good and does the job. There are small pores on the surfaces, which is natural for a piece of stone. The edges are not too sharp to bother fingers when handling it, which is good.

If you're seeking a highly polished marble presentation chess set this might not be the one for you.
Travertine is by nature rough and porous. Half of the set (and board) are made of this. That's not to say the set isn't attractive, it certainly is. But more in an "earthy" way. The pieces traditionally associated as white are such. Not all uniform, with lots of imperfections, holes, rough surfaces etc.
The pieces themselves are of the modern minimalistic design - not heavily adorned. Simple lines and shapes.. I really liked them.
The board itself is actually a little cramped, but will certainly work. It's also travertine (or a mix) so lot's of digs and pits as well. The unit came well packed with no damage. I appreciated the extra queens for pawn promotion. The board and pieces store nicely in the included case- which appears to be a textured tolex ("guitar amp" style vinyl) covered wood.
Lest I sound negative I'm. not. This will still make for an enjoyable game. Depending on your sense of aesthetic, would look great displayed. I would. but.... We have cats; who take a perverse pleasure knocking down anything that is both fragile and heavy. So we keep out chess set stored.
High quality marbel
I really don't know why I was expecting this to be light, but it IS made of marble, so it is properly hefty. It feels very durable and has a soft bottom so it shouldnt scratch any surface or send vibrations throughout a table. The pieces are hard and durable as well, so I have no doubt this set will last me a long time.
The case feels pretty dang cheap for a chess set this well made, however. It has cheap velcro and a single ribbon to keep it closed, but the inside is felt and just enough space for the board and pieces to stay cozy without sliding around.
This is a great set. The pieces are heavy and the whole thing is beautiful all set up. Very classy and "old world."
The dark pieces are made from a textured stone that has a lot of cracked and pitted surface area. In my view this compares poorly to the very smooth white pieces, and I might have preferred them to have a similar feel.
That said, I think this is a great gift set for a chest enthusiast who wants a step up from their first wooden set.
